Paragon Medical Announces Plans for Bioskills Lab

Paragon Medical Bio-skills Lab

December 1, 2009

With continued expansion of its Orthopaedic Instrument Global Design Center, Pierceton based Paragon Medical announced today, plans to invest in a bio-skills lab on its current campus just east of Warsaw. This new 2010 initiative was accelerated in direct support of the recent formation of OrthoWorx, a Warsaw-based industry, community and education initiative established to advance and support growth and innovation within the region's globally significant orthopedics device sector. OrthoWorx was established in September by BioCrossroads, Indiana’s initiative to grow, advance and invest in the life sciences. One of the key initiatives under OrthoWorx is talent attraction and workforce development. Paragon’s bio-skills lab can play a major role in achieving these goals.

In September, BioCrossroads released a report titled, "Warsaw, Indiana: The Orthopaedics Capital of the World". The group developed a detailed study of Indiana’s remarkable achievements and potential for growth in the global orthopaedic device sector. The report specifically provided “an overview, analysis and blueprint for future industry and community growth".

Warsaw is an expanding center of innovation and R&D activity and one of the key efforts outlined in the report was the need for technical support services. Paragon Medical immediately identified with the need and plans to respond by providing facilities that companies may utilize to perform their necessary cadaver lab studies and testing evaluations. CEO and founder of Paragon Medical, Tobias Buck states, "Capabilities like this makes sense near Warsaw and is a natural expansion of our Global Design Center. We are pursuing it to meet the needs of our clients while ensuring we do our part to protect the livelihood Orthopaedics has afforded this community". Plans are commencing and should be finalized by end of Q1 2010.

Paragon Medical Celebrates Grand Opening New Smithfield, Utah Facility Offers State of the Art Technology

Paragon Medical Utah: New Facility

November 11, 2009

Pierceton based Paragon Medical announced today that they recently celebrated the grand opening of their new manufacturing facility in Smithfield, Utah. Company management and employees were joined at a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 5th by the Cache Valley Chamber of Commerce and other local officials to commemorate this historic event for the company and the community. The ribbon cutting was followed by an open house for invited guests and employee’s families.

Paragon’s Utah plant manufactures trauma and sports medicine implantable components, as well as instruments for the sports medicine and spinal market segments. Paragon acquired the Smithfield plant in 2006 from DePuy Mitek, a Johnson & Johnson Company. Since purchasing this facility four years ago, Paragon has increased its workforce in Smithfield by 61% due to superior performance in meeting customer expectations associated with manufacturing medical devices.

With the new 54,000 square foot facility, Paragon will continue its investment in people and processes to support the changing needs of the medical device market. Focus will be given to employee development in machining, special processes and medical packaging as well as establishing in-house injection molding capabilities in early 2010.

The new facility features a 2,000 square foot Class 100,000 Clean Room for packaging and assembly of medical products and a state-of-the-art water treatment process. The group has also been a spring board for Paragon’s instruments and implantable component manufacturing in Changzhou, China.

“We are extremely excited about the opening of this new facility,” said Gary McGill, President and COO of Paragon Medical. “The facility was designed in part, to address changing enforcement of FDA regulations associated with FDA GMP. Paragon has always strived to be the industry leader in producing the highest quality medical devices in the market. Our new manufacturing facility will help us continue to meet or exceed those expectations, and will allow us to remain a pacesetter in the industry.”

Paragon Medical Announces New Division

Paragon Medical

October 2, 2009

With a concentration on improving surgical technique through innovative instruments, Paragon Medical announced that it has formally launched its Global Design Center into its own division of the company. Building on its successes, the newly named Orthopaedic Instrument Global Design Center (GDC) will function as a separate business entity and focus its expertise on advancing instruments technology. The transition speaks to the confidence the company has in the group’s ability to assist orthopaedic companies in designing and developing efficient, cost effective solutions for reusable or single use instruments.

The GDC provides full collaborative design, development, prototyping and testing capabilities for surgical instruments, implantable components and cases and trays. A key benefit is their close link to Paragon’s global manufacturing sites. This relationship has proven invaluable in mitigating both cost and quality issues prior to launch.

"The value we bring is that we get involved early and operate as an extension of the OEM’s development teams and assist them in completing more designs without compromising quality or delivery," states Van Flamion, Director of Paragon’s Global Design Center. "We focus first on our customers’ objectives and need for sound surgical technique. We know that when you offer superior surgical techniques, your medical devices have a greater opportunity for market success."

The center’s design capabilities cover a broad spectrum of reusable and disposable orthopaedic instruments. The development team members average over 10 years experience in design and development for medical devices enabling them to think technique first. They have experience throughout multiple market segments utilizing a vast variety of material solutions outside of the conventional metals; including polymer, silicone, and metal injection molding (MIM).
